The Kingdom of Bahrain is considered one of the most expat-friendly countries in the Persian Gulf, with more than half of the population being non-Bahraini. Bahrain is also known for its diversified economy with strong financial and manufacturing sectors and a forward-looking mindset that supports innovation and modern industries.

This article explains how to obtain a Golden Residency Visa in Bahrain by exploring the program’s requirements, application process, and benefits of getting Bahrain’s version of the Golden Visa. 

Bahrain Golden Visa Benefits

Bahrain’s Golden Residency Visa grants you permanent residence in the country, with no restrictions on traveling in and out, and no physical presence requirements. You can be issued a Bahraini National ID Card, allowing you access to healthcare, banking, and government services. 

As a Bahraini permanent resident, you’ll be able to find employment, own property, and start businesses in the country. Note that you’ll still need a separate work permit to work in Bahrain.

You’ll also enjoy other benefits of living in Bahrain, such as:

  • Fairly liberal social attitude when compared to other countries in the region
  • Generally safe and secure environment
  • High standard of living, with access to modern services and amenities

Bahrain Golden Residency Visa Requirements

To be eligible for a Bahrain Golden Residency Visa, you have to meet the requirements for one of the following categories:

  1. Professionals working in Bahrain
  2. Property owners
  3. Retirees
  4. Talented individuals

Requirements for Professionals Working in Bahrain

The pathway for professionals working in Bahrain was designed to allow you to stay in the country indefinitely after spending some time working there in a high-paying job. The requirements for a Bahrain Golden Residency under the pathway include:

  • At least five years of previous work in Bahrain
  • A minimum monthly salary of BHD 2,000 (USD 5,300) over that period

For the whole five-year period, you must have been insured with Bahrain’s Social Insurance Organization for an eligible salary amount. Only your basic salary is considered for the pathway, so you cannot use bonuses or other allowances to meet the requirements.

Note that, if awarded a Golden Residency Permit, you will still have to apply for a new work permit once your existing one expires.

Requirements for Property Owners

As a property investor in Bahrain, you can be eligible for a Golden Residency Visa if you invest BHD 130,000 (USD 345,000) in real estate in the country. 

The program also allows you to use the combined value of multiple properties to meet this requirement. 

Requirements for Retirees

As a retiree applying for Bahrain’s Golden Residence Visa program, you have to meet specific requirements if you worked in the country and are a non-resident retiree

  • An artist or creative who has received awards or critical acclaim for work in their medium
  • An innovator who has developed visionary products or services 
  • An athlete whose career included setting records, winning medals, and representing their country internationally 

If you decide to use this pathway to obtain the Bahrain Golden Visa, your application might be reviewed for approval by a specialized talent committee.

Bahrain Golden Residency Visa Application Process: 5 Steps Explained

When applying for a Bahrain Golden Residency Visa, you should follow these steps:

  1. Determine your residency pathway
  2. Gather the necessary documents
  3. Submit your application 
  4. Apply for your dependents
  5. Obtain Bahraini citizenship (optional)

1. Determine Your Residency Pathway

Depending on your professional history and retirement and pension arrangements, it should be easy to determine whether you meet the requirements. If you don’t, but you’d still like to become a permanent resident of Bahrain, purchasing real estate is the remaining option. 

As a foreigner, you can purchase real estate only in designated areas of Bahrain. These freehold zones can be found in the Kingdom’s capital of Manama, as well as on artificial islands and reclaimed land. They include mixed-use and mixed-use with commercial use properties, as well as special development projects. 

The Survey and Land Registration Bureau maintains the full list of designated areas.

2. Gather the Necessary Documents

When applying for a Golden Residency Visa in Bahrain, you’ll have to submit copies of the following documents regardless of the residency pathway you choose:

  • Your passport (with more than six months of validity remaining)
  • A valid Bahraini medical insurance certificate
  • Previous residence permit (if applicable)
  • A six-month bank statement 

In addition to these documents, you will have to provide pathway-specific supporting documents, such as:

3. Submit Your Application

You don’t have to be in Bahrain to submit the application, as the entire process is managed online through the eGovernment website. There, you can complete the application form, upload the required documents, and monitor your application status through the portal.

4. Apply for Your Dependents

To extend the Visa to your family members, you must submit an application and provide copies of the following documents: 

  • Your Golden Residency Visa
  • The dependents’ passports
  • The dependents’ valid Bahraini health insurance certificate
  • The dependents’ previous residence permit (if applicable)

To prove family ties with your dependents, you will also need to provide copies of the following supporting documentation:

The online application process is the same as for a regular Golden Residency Visa, with an expected processing time of five business days.

5. Obtain Bahraini Citizenship

If your end goal is to get Bahraini citizenship, obtaining a Golden Residence Visa is a good first step towards meeting the legal residence requirement. To become eligible for Bahraini citizenship, you need 25 years of continuous legal residence, or 15 if you’re an Arab applicant. 

Other requirements you have to meet include:

  • A strong proficiency in the Arabic language
  • Ownership of property registered with the Survey and Land Registration Bureau under your name
  • Good conduct and mental competency 

To start the application process, you need to be physically in the country and provide the following documents through the Nationality, Passports, and Residence Affairs website:

  • A citizenship application form
  • A letter showing your desire to become a Bahraini national, addressed to the King of Bahrain
  • A copy of your current passport and previous passports, to demonstrate residency continuity, with a certificate if you have a dual or triple name passport format
  • A read-out of your Bahrain ID card
  • Your birth and marriage certificates
  • A document with ID card data of your spouse and children
  • A nationality certificate 
  • A certificate confirming property ownership
  • A health certificate 
  • A certificate from the Commercial Registration office if you own a business
  • Education certificates

Other Ways To Obtain Residency in Bahrain

Bahrain also offers a temporary residence program with lower minimum requirements. The Self-Sponsorship Residence Permit allows you to stay in the country for two, five, or 10 years, as long as you meet the requirements as one of the following:

  1. An investor
  2. A retired foreigner
  3. A residential owner

Investor Requirements

As an investor in a company in Bahrain, you can apply for a Self-Sponsorship Residence Permit if you:

  • Invested at least BHD 100,000 (USD 265,000) in the company
  • Have a stable income of at least BHD 500 (USD 1,300)
  • Are medically insured in the country
  • Have a residence in the country (rentals are allowed)

To prove your eligibility for Bahrain residency by investment, you must provide documents that demonstrate your ownership of a company or shares in a company with a value matching the minimum investment requirements. You’ll also need your company’s commercial register and a bank statement for the three months preceding the application. 

Retired Foreigner Requirements

The Self-Sponsorship Residence Permit allows foreign workers in Bahrain or other GCC member countries to retire in Bahrain. The conditions you have to meet include: 

  • At least 15 years of documentable work 
  • A stable income of at least BHD 500 (USD 1,300)
  • A place of residence in the country (rentals are allowed)
  • Valid medical insurance in Bahrain 

When applying, you’ll be asked to provide documents that prove you meet these requirements, including a retirement certificate, a statement from the Social Insurance Organization, a rental lease contract, and an electricity bill. 

Residential Owner Requirement

If you own property in Bahrain, you can apply for the Self-Sponsorship Residence Permit if you meet the following requirements: 

  • The property you own has a minimum value of BHD 50,000 (USD 130,000)
  • You have a stable income of at least BHD 500 (USD 1,300)
  • You’re medically insured in the country

When applying for the permit, you’ll have to provide the following:

  1. Title deed indicating that the property value meets the requirements
  2. Evidence of a stable income
  3. Medical insurance 
  4. An electricity bill
