Oman: residency, citizenship, tax and living

The Oman Golden Visa allows you to obtain renewable 10-year residency by making an eligible investment of at least USD 520,000. Investment options include real estate, businesses, government bonds, shares, and bank deposits, with the option to combine some types of investments to reach the minimum threshold. After getting the visa, you will not have to meet any physical residence requirements.

In addition to the Golden Visa, Oman also maintains long-term residency programs for investors and property owners. These programs allow you to obtain two-year, renewable residency in the country if you purchase real estate or invest in a company or a government-approved project in the country. Neither of the pathways has a publicly available minimum investment requirement.

Foreigners can get Omani citizenship through marriage or naturalisation. In practice, however, Omani citizenship is rarely given to foreigners. Oman maintains strict citizenship requirements, including 15 consecutive years of residence with at most 90 days of absence from the country each year. Oman also enacted broad laws to allow it to strip its citizens of citizenship.

While Oman currently doesn’t impose personal income tax, it will implement it starting January 1, 2028, making it the first Gulf state to do so. The tax will apply to worldwide income for citizens and residents, and Omani-sourced income for non-residents. The tax rate will be 5%.
